Article Icon 1B-52 Crash at Edwards Kills Eight

All eight people aboard a B-52 Stratofortress were killed when the bomber crashed shortly after takeoff Monday from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert.

The aircraft went down around 11:20 a.m. on a routine test mission, bursting into flames near the airfield. Edwards officials closed the airfield, diverted inbound flights and said “initial indications are that the crash was not survivable.”

Those on board were a mix of uniformed military members, government civilians, and contractors, the Air Force said. Their names will be released after next-of-kin notifications are completed.

The cause is under investigation, a process officials said could take several months.

Article Icon 1Newsom Says DOJ Investigating Him, Wife

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are the subjects of a Justice Department investigation.

In a video posted to X, Newsom alleged that President Trump had directed the investigation, saying agents had approached family members, friends, and former employees and were “abusing the grand jury process.” He tied the investigation to his consideration of a 2028 presidential run and said he has “nothing to hide.”

CBS News reported that sources familiar with the matter said several DOJ investigations related to Newsom are being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento, with at least one dating back about a year. Sources told CBS that one inquiry involves Siebel Newsom’s taxes, while another relates to a former Newsom chief of staff who was indicted last year.

The Justice Department declined to comment, and the White House referred questions to the DOJ. Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani said Newsom is likely to argue the case is a “vindictive prosecution,” adding that many recent investigations by Trump’s Justice Department “have gone nowhere.”

Article Icon 1Cal Water Disputes Iranian Hack Claim

The California Water Service says a preliminary review of its computer and operational systems found no evidence that an alleged Iranian cyberattack reached its water production or delivery networks.

The utility responded after the Iranian-linked group Handala claimed it had breached Cal Water systems serving Chico, Bakersfield, and Visalia and posted roughly 5GB of allegedly stolen data, including what appeared to be customer billing records. Spokesperson Yvonne Kingman said Cal Water is working with state and federal law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Security researchers say independent confirmation of Handala’s claims remains limited. The group said the alleged intrusion was retaliation for recent U.S. actions in Iran, while experts cautioned that water utilities remain attractive targets for cyberattacks.
