Los Angeles police arrested 69 people and towed 200 vehicles early Saturday in a crackdown on a Harbor Gateway street takeover that drew more than 700 people.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Street Sweeper,” was planned in advance using drone technology and intelligence to anticipate four separate takeovers. More than 150 officers moved in before dawn at Figueroa Street and Alondra Boulevard, joined by sheriff’s deputies and the California Highway Patrol.

Of the arrests, 66 were for participating in or aiding a street race or takeover; the rest involved assault, battery, and obstructing officers. Officers issued 570 citations, most to spectators, and 128 to juveniles out past the city’s 10 p.m. curfew for minors.

Police also recovered seven firearms and canisters of nitrous oxide, and one impounded vehicle caught fire. “If you’re there, we’re going to be there, too,” Chief Jim McDonnell said, vowing more operations.

Article Icon 1California Weighs Smoke-Damage Rules

Two bills awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature would make California the first state to set testing and cleanup standards for wildfire smoke damage and require insurers to pay for testing.

The push follows the January 2025 Los Angeles-area fires, after which more than 13,000 insurance claims involved smoke damage. Many homeowners whose houses survived have waited months or years for testing, cleanup, and payment.

Assembly Bill 1642 would direct state agencies to set standards for testing and removing contaminants such as lead and asbestos. Its companion, Assembly Bill 1795, would require insurers to follow those standards, inspect properties within 30 days if they choose to inspect, and cover testing costs.

Supporters, including fire-survivor groups, say the measures would give homeowners clearer rules against insurers they accuse of delaying or denying claims. Neither bill takes effect without the other, and Newsom has until the end of September to sign or veto.
