Waves from Hurricane Marie overran 8-foot berms and flooded streets, garages, and the boardwalk in Long Beach and Seal Beach on Sunday.

The storm churned hundreds of miles offshore and weakened Sunday night, but its swells still pounded south-facing beaches with surf up to 10 feet. A National Weather Service meteorologist called the ocean conditions “life-threatening.”

Rainfall topped an inch in parts of Los Angeles County over the weekend, while dangerous surf and rip currents were expected to linger through today as heat builds back in.

Los Angeles County lifeguards anticipated more than 1,000 water rescues over the holiday weekend.

The rain also fouled freeways and likely contributed to a tree falling in Los Feliz that crushed two vehicles and sent one person to the hospital.

DHS Subpoenas 17 Million Driver Records

The Department of Homeland Security has subpoenaed the national driver-records clearinghouse, demanding the files of 17 million commercial license holders for immigration enforcement.

The subpoena seeks each driver’s name, birth date, license number, and Social Security number going back five years. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy defends the effort, saying every administration since 1988 has had database access and it helps keep unqualified drivers off the road.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of states argue that the demand is federal overreach barred by the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act.

California lawmakers voted in June to let the DMV expand its data sharing to noncommercial drivers through the same nonprofit. A federal judge in Virginia has temporarily blocked the commercial-driver data transfer as “unlawful,” with a hearing set for Sept. 10.
