Question: One of America’s most popular salads was reportedly thrown together late one night in 1937 by the owner of Hollywood’s Brown Derby restaurant, using ingredients he found in the refrigerator. What salad is it?

Answer: The Cobb salad. Restaurant owner Bob Cobb tossed together lettuce, avocado, tomato, bacon, chicken, egg, and blue cheese for a late-night bite for his friend, theater showman Sid Grauman. Grauman asked for a “Cobb salad” the next day, and it soon landed on the menu.
