Article Icon 1Boyle Heights Fire Forces Shelter-in-Place

A major fire erupted at a Boyle Heights cold-storage warehouse Wednesday afternoon, triggering a shelter-in-place order due to hazardous materials concerns for nearby neighborhoods.

The blaze broke out around 2:30 p.m. at the Lineage facility on South Los Palos Street and spread across rooftop solar panels, forcing firefighters to abandon rooftop operations and shift to a defensive strategy aided by water-dropping helicopters.

A compromised ammonia line and concerns about hazardous smoke prompted the shelter-in-place order, while the Los Angeles Police Department declared a citywide tactical alert to support emergency operations.

Mayor Karen Bass and County Supervisor Hilda Solis urged residents to stay indoors. By early evening, firefighters had made significant progress against the blaze with help from water-dropping helicopters. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.

State Sen. Aisha Wahab advanced Tuesday in the special election for former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s East Bay congressional seat, sending the race to an Aug. 18 runoff.

Under California election rules, a candidate can win outright with a majority of the vote. Otherwise, the top two finishers advance to a runoff regardless of party.

Wahab advanced from the 11-candidate field. The second runoff spot remained undecided late Tuesday, with former Dublin mayor and BART director Melissa Hernandez among the leading contenders. Republicans Wendy Huang and Dena Maldonado also competed in the heavily Democratic district.

Swalwell resigned in April after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced and ended his campaign for governor. He has denied the allegations. The Aug. 18 winner will serve the remainder of his term through January 2027.

Article Icon 1Fireworks Return to the Golden Gate

San Francisco will launch its official Fourth of July fireworks from the Golden Gate Bridge this year, marking only the third such display in the bridge’s history.

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the move, tying it to the nation’s 250th birthday. “The Golden Gate Bridge is as iconic as any landmark in the United States, so it’s an ideal place to launch fireworks,” Lurie said.

The show will launch from the bridge’s east side between its two towers, along with barges near the bridge and Pier 39, beginning around 9:30 p.m. The Golden Gate Bridge display will be the city’s only official Fourth of July fireworks show this year.

Suggested viewing locations include Crissy Field, Marina Green, Pier 39, and Fisherman’s Wharf. The bridge will close to vehicle traffic at 8:30 p.m. and reopen after the display concludes. The only previous fireworks shows from the bridge were held in 1987 and 2012 to mark its 50th and 75th anniversaries.
