Voters To Weigh 14 November Propositions

California voters will decide 14 statewide propositions on the Nov. 3 ballot, touching taxes, housing, health care, and election rules.

Proposition 39 would require government-issued ID at the polls, while Proposition 40 would impose a one-time 5% tax on billionaires’ net worth, most of it earmarked for health care.

Proposition 38 asks voters to borrow $8.4 billion for immunology research into cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s, a cost nearing $12 billion with interest.

Also on the ballot: an $11.25 billion veterans and affordable housing bond and the governor’s race between Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton.

Heat Builds as Surf, Tides Linger

Long Beach firefighters notified residents of about 20 oceanfront homes along its peninsula seawall to evacuate Monday as waves from Tropical Storm Marie battered the coast.

Though Marie stayed well offshore, its swell brought waves of 6 to 10 feet to some beaches and combined with tides exceeding 7 feet, with high surf and coastal flood advisories along the Los Angeles and Orange County coasts that remained in effect through Tuesday night.

The system also delivered the first measurable rainfall in months, with parts of Los Angeles County reporting around 1.5 inches of rain before showers tapered off.

Now the pattern is flipping to heat, with the National Weather Service posting a heat advisory for the Los Angeles area through Thursday, with temperatures peaking today and climbing to as high as 105 degrees.

Sunflowers Replace Vines as Wine Slumps

At a Healdsburg winery, an acre that once grew Zinfandel grapes now blooms with more than 3,000 sunflowers.

Chateau Diana, founded in the 1980s and still making wine from grapes sourced from other vineyards, planted the field to draw visitors as wine demand falls. Co-owner Corey Manning said younger drinkers have moved away from wine.

The pivot reflects a statewide slump, with California’s wine grape acreage falling to about 540,000 acres in 2025, down from 580,000 a year earlier amid oversupply and weak demand.

In Sonoma County alone, growers pulled more than 2,700 acres of vines between October 2024 and August 2025. Chateau Diana says pumpkins are its next crop.

➤ Sacramento: Crews are installing $5.2 million in Italian-finished stone on the new Capitol Annex, part of the $1.2 billion office complex for lawmakers and the governor. The granite was mined in California, shipped to Italy for finishing, then returned to Sacramento for installation. (More)

➤ Silicon Valley: Former Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes let cameras into her home 34 days before reporting to prison for a new documentary. You Can See Everything followed Holmes over three years and hits theaters in October. (More)

➤ Fresno: Craig Eady, 44, died Monday of injuries from Saturday’s small-plane crash near Sierra Sky Park, the fourth member of his family killed. His wife, flight instructor Danna Eady, was piloting the plane, which caught fire just off the runway. She and the couple’s two younger sons also died. Their two surviving children were not aboard. ➤ Parlier: A state appeals court sided with the city, overturning a $1 million jury award to former police chief Jose Garza. Garza said the city retaliated against him in 2021 over his investigation into suspected embezzlement. The city said his contract simply wasn’t renewed. (More)

➤ Mariposa County: The Colorado Fire remained at 233 acres and was 91% contained Monday after injuring two firefighters. Evacuation warnings remained in effect, with 45 structures threatened, but no civilian injuries or deaths were reported. Highway 140 remained closed from Briceburg to the Yosemite Bug Hostel. (More)

➤ Pismo Beach: The California State Parks Foundation is asking residents to photograph and report western monarch butterflies through Sept. 13 for California Biodiversity Day. The crowd-sourced sightings will help scientists ahead of the 30th annual western monarch count, after last year’s count came in as the third-lowest since 1997. (More)

➤ Los Angeles: Erik and Lyle Menendez were granted an early parole suitability hearing, tentatively set for March 2027, after being denied last year over prison rule violations. Resentenced in 2025 to 50 years to life for the 1989 murders of their parents, they hadn’t been eligible to apply again until August 2028. (More)

➤ Arleta: Four people were hurt Tuesday in an explosion at a street construction site on Van Nuys Boulevard. Two were hospitalized, and all four are expected to be OK. Firefighters suspect a welding-related natural gas explosion. (More)

➤ Malibu: A driveway at a vacant home collapsed into a sinkhole Tuesday morning amid coastal erosion near Point Lechuza, rupturing water and gas lines. The gas was shut off, while crews worked beneath the driveway to protect neighboring homes from further erosion. (More)

➤ San Diego: Two people were killed when a small plane crashed and caught fire on the runway at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa on Monday evening. The airport was temporarily closed as crews extinguished the fire. (More)

➤ San Diego County: Up to 500 people, most of them underage, descended on a Swimply pool rental in the 4S Ranch community Sunday night, with juveniles drinking in the street and one partygoer apparently stabbed with a broken bottle. Police cited the homeowner. (More)
