Pelosi Moves to Shape Her Succession

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is using her political network to help Supervisor Connie Chan win the race to succeed her in Congress against state Sen. Scott Wiener.

She has hosted six-figure fundraisers for Chan and loaned her campaign a top adviser. Wiener, who has long praised Pelosi, says she has “basically taken over” his opponent’s campaign.

The rivalry boiled over last week over an AI chatbot Wiener’s campaign built to mock Chan’s record on housing and transit. After it generated responses to prompts about Chan’s accent and citizenship that Pelosi and other female lawmakers criticized as sexist and racist, Wiener took it down and apologized.

Wiener is the front-runner, though polling has shown the race tightening, with Chan carrying Pelosi’s endorsement. The winner will inherit a seat Pelosi has represented for decades.

Jalapeño Recall Widens to Grocery Stores

Taylor Farms, the Salinas-based produce company, recalled more than a dozen prepared foods made with jalapeños on Sunday, pulling salsas, dips, and guacamole from Walmart, Target, Kroger, and other chains in 26 states.

The recall includes grocery products after officials had been working to determine whether affected jalapeños reached stores, with “best if used by” dates running through Aug. 16. Regulators tie the peppers to a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplied Coast Citrus Distributors.

Taylor Farms said it has stopped sourcing from the Mexican farm and is not aware of any illnesses tied to its recalled products. Consumers should discard the affected items, with refunds available at the place of purchase.

The broader outbreak has sickened 345 people in 27 states, hospitalizing 36 with no deaths, and Chipotle and Qdoba, which received affected jalapeños, have already stopped serving them.

Beloved Big Bear Eagle Jackie Dies

Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle with a worldwide following, died early Monday after weeks of intensive care.

The Ojai Raptor Center said her condition kept deteriorating despite oxygen therapy and around-the-clock monitoring. She had been in the center’s care since mid-July, after a rescue team found her gravely ill near Big Bear Lake following a fight with two younger eagles.

Veterinarians found her severely anemic with kidney inflammation, and she received a blood transfusion from another eagle before her condition continued to worsen. Her remains were transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Estimated to be about 14 years old, Jackie raised several eaglets with her mate, Shadow, on the Friends of Big Bear Valley nest camera that drew fans around the world. Shadow was recently seen flying through the Big Bear Lake habitat.
