Article Icon 1Weinstein Conviction Upheld, Resentencing Ordered

A California appeals court on Friday upheld Harvey Weinstein’s 2022 rape and sexual assault conviction but ordered him to be resentenced, leaving his guilty verdicts intact.

The court rejected Weinstein’s claims that legal errors denied him a fair trial, though his attorneys say they will appeal to the California Supreme Court.

The ruling came a day after New York prosecutors dropped plans for a fourth rape trial, while Weinstein remains convicted on a separate New York sexual assault charge and awaits sentencing there in September.

Article Icon 1Former SDSU Volleyball Star Found Dead at Ocean Beach

San Diego authorities identified the woman found dead in the Pacific Ocean near the Ocean Beach Pier on June 18 as Summer Nash, 34, a former San Diego State University volleyball player whose cause of death remains under investigation.

Lifeguards pulled Nash from the water near the 5000 block of Newport Avenue around 3 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A four-year letterwinner for the Aztecs from 2010 to 2013, she played a key role on the program’s 2012 NCAA Tournament team and later went on to coach at Torrey Pines High School, Mira Costa College, San Diego State, and Stanford’s beach volleyball program.

Her former coach remembered Nash in an Instagram tribute as someone with “a beautiful spirit, a kind heart, and a presence that made those around her better.” The San Diego Police Department is continuing to investigate her death.

Article Icon 1Travel Site Highlights Hidden California Trails

The travel site Islands just spotlighted nine underrated trails across California, a quieter answer to permit-choked icons like Half Dome and Mount Whitney.

The picks span the state, from the Canyon Creek Lakes Trail in the far-north Trinity Alps to Death Valley’s Desolation Canyon, the waterfalls of Yosemite’s lesser-known Hetch Hetchy, and the volcanic High Peaks of Pinnacles National Park.

The common thread is solitude: that Trinity Alps route holds a 4.8-star rating from about 1,000 AllTrails reviews, against more than 17,000 for Half Dome.

Science & Technology

Dear California Flyover Reader,

If you chose not to invest in The Flyover’s fundraising campaign but still want to support us, this one’s for you.

The California Flyover will always be free. Producing it isn’t.

So, two honest questions:

Do you rely on us for news without the spin? Is fact-first journalism worth fighting for?

If your answer is yes, hear me out.

Behind every morning email is a team of real people working to bring you the news clearly and fairly, without an agenda pulling the coverage one way or the other. We don’t answer to advertisers or a corporate parent, we answer to you.

So today, we’re asking: if The California Flyover has earned a place in your morning, will you chip in to help keep it going strong?

Maybe you’re wondering whether $10 really makes a difference. It does. But here’s the thing—it makes a huge difference when a thousand of you decide to chip in together.

We’ve seen it work. When we opened The Flyover up to investment, thousands of readers stepped in—not billionaires, not a corporation with an angle, just people who read this every morning. That’s how we stay independent: lots of readers, each doing a little, adding up to something no single backer could buy.

This is a simple, powerful way to support true, independent journalism.

So, will you be one of the thousand? Even $10 says you believe in what we’re building. $50 or $100 helps us grow, launch new editions, and deliver more of the news America is hungry for.

Donations from readers are an important revenue source for The California Flyover, and I hope you will help if you can.

Thanks for reading—every morning, and today.
