Search for Missing Marine Turns to Recovery

The Navy has shifted a 43-hour search for a U.S. Marine who went missing off Southern California to a recovery operation.

The Marine was reported missing early Thursday while serving aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Anchorage during training with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The ship is homeported in San Diego, and the unit is based at Camp Pendleton.

The search began at 1:21 a.m. Thursday and involved the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force. Crews covered roughly 2,400 square miles using three surface ships and 12 aircraft.

The effort became a search and recovery mission Friday night, the Navy said. Officials have not released the Marine’s name pending notification of next of kin.

Newsom Urges a National Billionaires’ Tax

Gov. Gavin Newsom called Friday for a national tax on billionaires, even as he opposes a California ballot measure that would tax the state’s wealthiest residents.

In a Substack post, Newsom said the federal government should take an ownership stake in artificial intelligence companies, writing that it is “time for an economic reset for America.”

His announcement followed a health care union’s decision to keep a state measure on the November ballot that would impose a one-time 5% tax on the assets of California billionaires to offset recent state and federal healthcare cuts. Newsom opposes it, warning the wealthy would relocate: “Wealth is movable, and it shops for the state with the lowest taxes.”

Many liberal groups that usually favor higher taxes share that worry, and business interests have also criticized the state plan. Newsom, who is considering a 2028 presidential run, said the fight “belongs at the federal level.”

$52K in Donations Help Reopen Cielito Lindo

Cielito Lindo, the Olvera Street taquito stand that has served Los Angeles for generations, reopened June 24 after more than $52,000 in community donations helped the family keep the business open.

The family-run stand closed in May, citing costly electrical repairs, overdue rent, mounting city late fees, and what it called “dramatically increased operating costs.”

A GoFundMe campaign drew more than 900 donors and topped $40,000 in its first five days, reaching $52,402 by June 27. “After six long weeks behind the scenes, we’re finally open!” the family wrote on social media.

Founded nearly a century ago by Aurora Guerrero, a single immigrant mother from Zacatecas, Mexico, the stand is now operated by her fourth-generation granddaughters, who continue serving its signature hand-rolled taquitos with avocado sauce.
