Six candidates will square off tonight in a televised debate in California’s wide-open race to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The debate, hosted by ABC7 and USC and broadcast from Los Angeles at 5 p.m., features Democrats Katie Porter, Eric Swalwell, Tom Steyer, and Matt Mahan, alongside Republicans Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton.

The event has drawn controversy after candidates, including Xavier Becerra, Antonio Villaraigosa, and other candidates such as Betty Yee and Tony Thurmond, were excluded using polling and fundraising criteria—a method organizers say is objective.

Recent polling shows a fragmented field with no clear frontrunner and a large share of undecided voters, raising the possibility that vote-splitting could shape who advances. Under California’s top-two primary on June 2, all candidates appear on one ballot, with the top two, regardless of party, moving on to November.

Tonight’s debate is expected to focus on cost of living, housing, and public safety, the top concerns for voters.

ICE agents in plain clothes detained a woman and her daughter inside San Francisco International Airport’s (SFO) Terminal 3 on Sunday night.

Video of the arrest spread quickly on social media, showing bystanders confronting the agents and demanding badge numbers. Officers later wheeled the woman through the terminal in an airport wheelchair as about a dozen San Francisco police officers formed a barrier around the federal agents.

An airport spokesperson said agents were escorting the woman and her daughter on an outbound flight and called it an isolated incident unrelated to President Trump’s plan to deploy ICE to airports nationwide.

The Department of Homeland Security identified the woman as Angelina Lopez-Jimenez and the girl as Wendy Godinez-Lopez, and said they had final removal orders from 2019.

San Francisco police said officers responded to a 911 call but did not assist in the detention, consistent with the city’s sanctuary policies. Mayor Daniel Lurie called the incident upsetting and reaffirmed that local law enforcement will not participate in federal immigration enforcement.

An Oceanside surf coach jumped off a jetty fully clothed and pulled a struggling father and his daughter from a rip current.

Lucas Taub was coaching at a Western Surfing Association contest near the Oceanside Harbor South Jetty when he spotted the girl being pulled into deeper water. Her father, Chris Greene, went in after her but quickly exhausted himself fighting the current.

Bystander video shows Taub entering the water from the jetty and swimming to the pair as they struggled to stay above the surface. He brought both safely to shore. No one required medical attention.

Greene reunited with Taub on Saturday. “I honest to God didn’t think I was going to make it,” he said. “I look up and on the jetty is Lucas.”
