Answer: They were brought over for the movies. In 1924, 15 American bison were brought to the island for a Western film shoot, then left behind because removing and wrangling them was impractical. Their descendants still roam the island’s interior today, with the Catalina Island Conservancy maintaining a herd of no more than 150 animals.
