Question: Every spring, killer whale pods converge on Monterey Bay for what researchers call “killer whale season.” What draws them there?

Answer: Gray whale calves. Each spring, gray whale mothers and their newborn calves migrate north from breeding lagoons in Baja California toward Alaska. When they reach Monterey Bay, some must cross the deep Monterey Submarine Canyon, where killer whales patrol and may ambush the calves.
