Article Icon 1Millions of California Student Records Stolen

Hackers stole personal data belonging to millions of current and former California public school students whose information was held by testing provider Educational Testing Service (ETS). An unauthorized party used a compromised login to copy files between May 22 and Sept. 18.

The stolen information may include names, birth dates, addresses, schools, student identification numbers, race or ethnicity, disability status, testing accommodations, and assessment results. Social Security numbers, financial information, account passwords, and parent or guardian data were not involved.

ETS said it has found no evidence that the information was made public. Affected students are eligible for two years of free identity-protection services, and families are urged to watch for scams and consider freezing the credit of children under 16.

Article Icon 1Zacharia Leaves Post amid California Bar Questions

Katie Zacharia left her post as White House press secretary after five days on the job. President Trump said he did not fire her but urged her to reconsider after what he called harsh media treatment.

Zacharia earned her law degree from Pepperdine University in 2011 but failed California’s bar exam and never retook it. The California resident had repeatedly described herself as a lawyer, while Trump introduced her as an attorney.

The Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint with the State Bar of California, asking it to investigate whether Zacharia violated state law by presenting herself as a lawyer without a license. Zacharia maintained that she never claimed to be an “attorney at law.”

A Costa Mesa woman who registered her dog to vote and submitted ballots in two elections had her criminal case dismissed after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and paying for anti-voter-fraud billboards featuring the pet.

Laura Lee Yourex, 64, originally faced five felony charges. Prosecutors said a ballot submitted under her dog’s name, Maya Jean, was counted in California’s 2021 gubernatorial recall election, while a ballot submitted in the 2022 primary was rejected.

Under the plea agreement, Yourex paid $1,500 for four billboards along Orange County’s 55 and 22 freeways. The signs feature Maya posing with a ballot and an “I Voted” sticker and will remain up through the Nov. 3 election.
