World Cup Operations Recover 11 Children

Bay Area authorities arrested 25 trafficking suspects during World Cup enforcement operations and contacted 53 trafficking victims for recovery.

Among those contacted, 11 children were successfully recovered. The operations ran June 9-July 2 across San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Mountain View, and Campbell.

In Santa Clara County, a joint command post coordinated enforcement and monitored threats. FBI analysts and victim specialists supported the broader operations, and authorities seized multiple firearms.

California Challenges Emergency Grant Rules

California joined a multistate lawsuit challenging the federal government’s conditions on federal grants used for disaster response, terrorism prevention, cybersecurity, and other public-safety programs.

The requirements include citizenship checks of voter rolls, hand-marked paper ballots, post-election audits, and cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit alleges states could lose at least 20% of some funding for noncompliance. A Governor’s Office of Emergency Services spokesperson said the money helps first responders coordinate during wildfires, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, and other emergencies.

Badwater 135 Returns to Death Valley

The Badwater 135 Ultramarathon returns, sending 98 runners on a nonstop course from Death Valley to Whitney Portal from Monday through Wednesday.

The route begins 282 feet below sea level and crosses three mountain ranges before reaching the 8,360-foot finish. Runners can face temperatures up to 130 degrees and pavement hot enough to damage their shoes.

Athletes from 24 states and 20 other countries will compete, including 65 first-timers. Finishers must complete the course within a new 45-hour limit.
