Wahab Wins Swalwell’s House Seat

State Sen. Aisha Wahab won a special election Thursday to serve the remainder of former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s term representing California’s 14th Congressional District through January.

Wahab, a Democrat, will become the first Afghan American to serve in Congress after defeating BART Director Melissa Hernandez despite millions in outside spending, much of it supporting Hernandez.

Swalwell resigned in April following sexual misconduct allegations he denies. Wahab and Hernandez will face each other again Nov. 3 for the district’s next full two-year term.

California Approves New Wildfire Landscaping Rules

California regulators unanimously approved new Zone 0 wildfire rules requiring nearly 1.75 million homes in fire-prone areas to reduce vegetation and combustible materials within 5 feet of structures. 

The rules apply to properties in State Responsibility Areas and locally protected Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.

Residents can check whether their property is affected using CAL FIRE’s hazard maps.

New construction must comply once the rules clear final state review. Existing properties will be phased in over several years, including removal of combustible landscaping materials and eventual replacement of certain wooden fences and gates within the 5-foot zone.

USS Lincoln Heads Home after Extended Deployment

The San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln is heading home after a nine-month deployment supporting U.S. operations against Iran, with its return expected in the coming weeks.

The USS George Washington arrived in the Middle East Wednesday to relieve the Lincoln, which spent more than 250 days at sea, including over 200 consecutive days without a port visit.

Families and lawmakers raised concerns about food and supply shortages and crew mental health during the extended deployment. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has said those reports were “completely misrepresented.”

Adm. Brad Cooper praised the crew’s performance, calling the deployment one of the most operationally intense of the modern era and telling sailors and Marines, “You have delivered a performance for the ages, and now you are going home.”
