Hawk Fire Prompts Evacuations

A wildfire that broke out in Washoe County, Nevada, has burned thousands of acres and prompted evacuation warnings across the state line into Sierra County, California.

The Hawk Fire climbed to about 13,000 acres by Sunday afternoon in the Peavine Peak area north of Reno and was moving northeast, driven by wind. The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office posted evacuation warnings along the Nevada border.

In Nevada, evacuation orders covered communities near the California border, with an estimated 1,000 homes under orders late Saturday afternoon. A shelter was set up at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

The fire also knocked out power on the California side. NV Energy de-energized transmission lines feeding the region, cutting electricity to nearly 15,000 Truckee Donner Public Utility District customers. Power began returning late Saturday and had been restored to all district customers before midnight.

California Nears Underage-Marriage Ban

California moved closer to banning all marriage under 18 after the state Senate unanimously passed Assembly Bill 1267.

The measure, authored by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, D-Santa Cruz, and Sen. Aisha Wahab, D-Hayward, would end the exception that lets minors of any age marry with parental consent and a court order. California is one of three states with no minimum marriage age.

Supporters cite an Unchained at Last analysis estimating 35,000 minors married in California from 2000 to 2021, the vast majority involving underage girls and adult men.

Earlier versions stalled amid opposition from Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and ACLU California Action, which warned a blanket ban could push young people in abusive relationships further from social services and harm minors who willingly marry.

Planned Parenthood is no longer opposed, while ACLU California Action remains opposed to this year’s bill. If the Assembly gives final approval and Gov. Gavin Newsom signs it, the change takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.

Timber Fire Grows, Highway 1 Stretch Reopens

The Timber Fire burning near Big Sur has grown to 12,665 acres and stood at 25% containment Sunday afternoon.

The fire is pushing east into steep, roadless terrain, and personnel assigned to the fire fell to 1,202, down from 2,177 a week earlier. “There’s no sense in having hundreds of fire engines in the wilderness,” said CAL FIRE’s Thomas Shoots, adding that crews are leaning heavily on aircraft.

The blaze started Aug. 8 in the Los Padres National Forest and threatens 530 structures, none damaged, with no injuries reported. The cause remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, Caltrans reopened a 10-mile stretch of Highway 1 on Saturday afternoon, from about two miles north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to the Big Sur Bakery.

The highway had been closed since Aug. 11 to support firefighting, and Caltrans advised drivers to use caution in the area or use Highway 101 as an alternate route.
