Question: What is a pine tree species in the world that grows wild in just two locations, both in California?
Answer: The Torrey pine. One of the rarest pines in the world, it grows naturally only at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve north of La Jolla and on Santa Rosa Island in the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden recently planted 45 seedlings as a genetic backup in case the wild populations are lost.
