Article Icon 1Sewage Spill Closes Long Beach Swimming Areas

All of Long Beach’s coastal swimming areas, including its bays and lagoons, remain closed after about 29,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a broken pipe in Belmont Shore on Friday evening.

Roughly 14,000 gallons reached the ocean, while a cleanup contractor recovered about 15,000 gallons and crews rerouted flows to a secondary line.

Emergency repairs to the pressurized sewer main are underway, and officials haven’t said what caused the break. Water testing resumes today, and the city’s health department will decide when beaches reopen.

Article Icon 1Solar Plant Could Bring 600 Jobs to Hanford

AMPS Solar is turning a former Del Monte tomato plant in Hanford into a solar module assembly facility that could employ more than 600 people over the next few years.

The company’s site plan calls for up to 8 gigawatts of capacity inside the existing warehouses on the 125-acre site, with operations running up to 24 hours a day and about 200 workers per shift.

Recruiting for assembly, manufacturing, packaging, and shipping jobs begins in November, including entry-level roles that require no experience. Production will phase in, and hiring is expected to ramp up once the line is running.

Article Icon 1California Home Affordability Stuck at 19%

Just 19% of California households could afford a median-priced single-family home in the third quarter, unchanged from the spring, according to the California Association of Realtors.

Buyers statewide needed a minimum income of about $228,000 to qualify, and in Orange County a $1.47 million median-priced home required $374,400 in annual income.

Affordability had climbed to 22% in the first quarter, a four-year high, before slipping in the spring as mortgage rates ticked up. In Los Angeles County, buyers needed about $244,000 to afford a $958,450 median-priced home.
