Article Icon 1Hollywood Burbank Opens $1.3 Billion Terminal

Hollywood Burbank Airport opened its new 355,000-square-foot replacement terminal to travelers Tuesday, with the first flight scheduled to depart at 7 a.m.

The roughly $1.3 billion project replaces an aging facility that dates to the 1930s and raised safety concerns because of its proximity to the runways. The new terminal keeps the airport’s 14 gates while adding more space, restaurants, shops, and an upgraded security checkpoint.

Plans also call for 14 restaurants and a new multilevel parking structure, with baggage claim carousels moved indoors.

At a ribbon-cutting last week, comedian Jay Leno joined local officials to mark the terminal’s completion. One longtime quirk survives the move: passengers still cross the tarmac on foot and climb stairs to board, rather than using jet bridges.

Article Icon 1ICE Enforcement Intensifies in Valley

Federal immigration enforcement has intensified in the Central Valley during a reported 45-day operation known as “Operation Safe California”, with stepped-up activity reported across Kern and Fresno counties.

Watch groups reported roughly 61 people detained around Fresno as of Oct. 8, with enforcement activity also observed across the Central Valley and Central Coast.

Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford said the Department of Homeland Security told his office the enforcement actions target people with active warrants and known criminal histories. His statement did not specify which communities were affected or how many had been detained.

Advocates reported at least 100 people detained across the San Joaquin Valley over three days, as immigration arrests across California had already risen sharply. Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, D-Fresno, said federal officials describe the sweeps as “targeted enforcement,” a characterization she disputes amid reports of workers detained on their way to work.

NASA’s Perseverance rover, built and operated by the Caltech-managed Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, has driven farther than any vehicle ever has on another world.

The six-wheeled rover reached 28.10 miles on Mars on Sunday, nudging ahead of the 28.06 miles logged by NASA’s Opportunity rover between 2004 and 2018. Perseverance covered that ground in about five and a half years, compared with nearly 15 years for Opportunity.

Much of that progress comes from the rover’s self-driving system, AutoNav, which maps the terrain and plots its own path without constant direction from Earth. Perseverance has used it for more than 90% of its total driving distance.

Since landing in February 2021, Perseverance has hunted for signs of ancient life in Jezero Crater and has gathered 29 rock and soil samples. NASA recently extended the mission through about the end of 2028.
