Newsom Signs ‘Leno’s Law’

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1392 at Jay Leno’s Burbank garage Wednesday, establishing a phased-in smog-check exemption for qualifying collector cars from model years 1976 through 1985.

California currently exempts vehicles made before the 1976 model year. Under the new law, qualifying vehicles from model years 1976 through 1980 will become exempt Jan. 1, 2028, with one model year added annually until the exemption reaches 1985 models in 2033.

Vehicles must be insured as collector cars or driven fewer than 1,000 miles annually to qualify. The bipartisan measure was jointly authored by Democratic state Sen. Dave Cortese of San Jose and Republican state Sen. Shannon Grove of Bakersfield.

Supporters say collector cars are generally driven infrequently, represent a small portion of California’s vehicle fleet, and contribute relatively little to statewide emissions.

Overflowing Pool Triggers Hollywood Hills Collapse

An overflowing swimming pool sent thousands of gallons of water into a Hollywood Hills slope Friday, causing a partial collapse and prompting the evacuation of eight apartments.

The saturated hillside gave way near North Wilcox Avenue, sending cinder blocks and debris through the roof of a vacant building below. No injuries were reported.

A nearby project manager shut off the water after hearing crashing noises and discovering the overflowing pool. Firefighters removed about 6,000 gallons from the pool, and residents were allowed to return later that day.

The damaged building and pool area were red-tagged. A Los Angeles Fire Department captain said reports indicated that a hose had been left running for an extended period and described the incident as preventable.

Measles Alert Spans Six Counties

California health officials issued an exposure warning after a person contagious with measles traveled aboard Amtrak trains and connecting buses across six counties.

The passenger also passed through several stations, including Sacramento Valley Station. Officials said people aboard the identified trips or present at affected stations during the specified periods may have been exposed.

Potentially exposed travelers should confirm their immunity and monitor for fever, cough, a runny nose, red eyes, or a rash for 21 days. Anyone who develops symptoms should call a healthcare provider before arriving to avoid exposing others.

Measles spreads through the air and can remain in an enclosed area for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection, according to public health officials.
