California Tracks AI-Related Job Losses

California launched a public dashboard designed to identify early signs that artificial intelligence may be contributing to job losses.

The tracker analyzes unemployment claims from workers in occupations considered highly exposed to AI, with results broken down by industry, region, education, age, gender, race, and ethnicity.

Initial findings showed no statewide surge in claims among AI-exposed workers. However, claims increased among college-educated workers and remained elevated in the Bay Area and technology sectors.

Researchers cautioned that the data cannot prove AI caused individual layoffs. The online tracker will be updated monthly to help officials identify workers who may need training or job-search support.

Former College Soccer Player Found Dead

Former college soccer player Bryn Waite, 26, was found dead in the water at La Jolla Shores Beach on Wednesday, July 22.

Emergency personnel responded after a bystander reported seeing her floating offshore. Waite was pronounced dead at the scene, and her cause of death remains under investigation.

The Anchorage, Alaska, native played defender for Central Washington during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Friends said she lived in San Diego and had recently become engaged.

Waite is the second former college athlete found dead in San Diego coastal waters in 34 days. Summer Nash, 34, was recovered near Ocean Beach Pier on June 18. Authorities have not indicated the deaths are connected.

Jeff Kent Enters Hall as a Giant

Former San Francisco Giants second baseman Jeff Kent was inducted Sunday into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, with the Giants represented on his plaque.

Kent spent six seasons in San Francisco, won the 2000 National League MVP Award, and helped the Giants reach the 2002 World Series.

His five best seasons by wins above replacement came with the Giants, often batting behind Barry Bonds. Kent finished with a record 351 home runs as a second baseman.

The Giants will retire Kent’s No. 21 on Aug. 29 at Oracle Park, where the first 21,000 fans will receive replica Hall of Fame rings. 

Kent thanked his family, friends, teammates, and mentors during his Hall of Fame induction speech.
